There is a good reason why the Y is referred to as America's Favorite Swim Instructor. Y's have been teaching people of all ages to swim for more than a century! The Missoula YMCA offers a variety of swimming lessons, swim classes and swim teams.
In our aquatics programs, children learn to be safe around water and they feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with learning something new. Our aquatics programs use a problem-solving, guided-discovery teaching approach in a positive, caring environment. Kids can develop lifelong skills that will help them stay healthy.
Contact the Director of Aquatics, Rose Kahane at email@example.com for more information on any aquatics program.

YMCA preschool swimming begins with water adjustment, and stresses safety and confidence in the aquatic environment. Class ratio is 1:5.
Children must be adjusted to the water. They will learn to put their faces underwater and blow bubbles. They will learn to develop independent movement with the assistance of noodles and barbells, and to float on their fronts and backs with the aid of an instructor. Children will begin to develop basic kicking, floating and pool safety skills. To pass, children should be able to push off the wall on their fronts or backs and swim five feet to an instructor.
Children are comfortable in the water and are able to swim five feet with minimal assistance from the instructor. With basic skills already accomplished, children will learn basic motoring skills necessary for the front, back and side strokes. To pass, children should be able to propel themselves 15 feet without assistance.
Children have solid skills from eel level and are ready to learn rudimentary mechanics of backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke and freestyle with rhythmic breathing. Children will learn to jump into deep water independently and swim to the surface, to do 10 bobs on the wall, to do surface glides to the bottom of the four-foot deep area, and to front and back float for 20 seconds without assistance. To pass, children should be able to do the above strokes across the width of the pool with minimal assistance.
Young swimmers here begin to refine strokes and build endurance. Children are confident enough in the water to learn to tread water for 30 seconds without assistance and to float on their back for one minute without assistance. They learn underwater somersaults and kneeling dives.
This program begins with water adjustment and progresses toward competency in all strokes with emphasis on safety and self-esteem. Instructor-to-child ratios posted next to each level.
This is the beginner level for children who are uncomfortable or inexperienced in the water. Children will learn how to float on their fronts and backs, put their faces into the water, and propel themselves through the water with a strong kick. To pass, children must be able to paddle 25 yards with a flotation device, either on their fronts, backs or sides.
Children will begin to learn rudimentary stroke skills with less reliance on flotation devices. Stroke instruction includes: backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and freestyle with rhythmic breathing. Children will learn to jump into deep water independently and swim to the surface, to do 10 bobs on the wall, to surface glide to the bottom of the four-foot deep area, and to front and back float for 20 seconds without assistance. To pass, children should be able to do the above strokes across the width of the pool with minimal assistance.
Children will begin to refine their stroke skills. They will add the scissor kick to the sidestroke and rotary breathing to the freestyle. Children will also play special games to help increase their confidence. To pass, children must have rotary breathing skills and the ability to do all the strokes for the length (25 yards) of the pool.
Children will further refine their skills and build endurance. They will work to specifically refine their breaststroke, as well as learn the butterfly and flip turns.
This nationally recognized Y program for infants, toddlers, and their parents, teaches water adjustment for each developmental level. Classes require (2) or more participants to occur.
The Y welcomes requests from Childcare and School Groups for group lessons in the morning or early afternoons. Please arrange 30 days in advance through the Aquatics Office.
