Vounteer FAQs

Most positions require volunteers to be 18+ years old. Some positions allow youth to volunteer when accompanied by a responsible adult age 18+.

Training and requirements depend on your volunteer role. The Missoula YMCA has four volunteer types: Policy Volunteers (low access), Fundraising Volunteers (low access), Day of Event Volunteers (low access), and Program Volunteers (high access).

  • Low-Access Volunteers interact with participants infrequently and only under direct staff supervision. Low-access volunteers are required to pass an annual multi-state background check, sign the YMCA's code of conduct, and complete an annual child abuse prevention training.
  • High-Access Volunteers regularly interact with participants or may supervise them, often forming ongoing relationships. Examples include instructors, coaches, or mentors. High-access volunteers are required to submit an application (including two professional references, one personal reference, and work/education/volunteer history), attend an in-person interview and training, pass an annual multi-state background check, sign the YMCA's code of conduct, and complete an annual child abuse prevention training.

Additional training may be required depending on your volunteer position. Both low- and high-access volunteers must be identifiable as YMCA volunteers when performing volunteer duties.
